Senior Lead Marketing Manager at Lumen Featured in Hispanic Network Magazine
February 24, 2021

Lumen’s own Deborah Rios-Barnes featured in this month’s Hispanic Network Magazine

Deborah Rios-Barnes, Senior Marketing Manager at Lumen Technologies, is recognized in February’s edition of Hispanic Network Magazine – a Latino business and employment magazine.

“My colleagues are the best part of coming to work,” says Deborah Rios-Barnes, senior lead marketing manager for Lumen Technologies. “I enjoy collaborating on projects and coming up with innovative ways to reach goals.”

Rios-Barnes is generous with her time in the workplace.  Rios-Barnes is an active member of the SOMOS Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Lumen, even co-moderating September 2020’s Extra Special Coffee Talk program. While the SOMOS acronym stands for Success Oriented Members Offering Support, this Hispanic-focused employee resource group name is also the Spanish word for “we are.”

“Being a part of [SOMOS] allows me to learn and explore the various dynamics within our Hispanic culture,” explained Rios-Barnes. “I have always been passionate about community service and my ethnicity. I appreciate Lumen for supporting the ERGs, as they are a valuable resource for career development through engagement.”

Rios-Barnes continues to volunteer and support the interests of Latinx people in her Orlando, FL community. She was voted the first Hispanic Chairwoman of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce during 2020, was a panelist for the Chamber’s “Spark the Peace” webinar in July, and supported the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund.

“I am a first-generation college graduate. Getting a job and helping the family took priority over obtaining an education,” explained Rios-Barnes. “In 2000, my husband and I raised a family while working on our bachelor’s degrees.  I proudly walked across the stage with my husband in 2002. I would advise anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity and especially age, to not give up and to not become victims of circumstance. Set goals for yourself, celebrate little victories along the way, find a mentor, own your destiny and it’s okay to rewrite your story at any stage of your life.”
