BUENOS AIRES, March 15, 2022. In 2021, the number of Latin American customers who acquired Lumen's Edge Computing services doubled when compared to the previous year.  “We notice a growing interest in different industries, particularly in those where latency is critical, such as entertainment, content creation, e-commerce, and public cloud service providers,” said Leonardo Barbero, Lumen Latin America’s senior vice president of products and access management.

Additionally, the company maintained its plan of early and continuous investments to expand its networks and deliver the best customer experience possible, even when faced with peak demands due to the acceleration of digital transformation.

During 2021, the expansion of regional data centers – including facilities in São Paulo (Brazil), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Quito (Ecuador), Cali (Colombia) and Lima (Peru) – were intensified, and there was an approximate 12% increase in installed capacity across Latin America.

Lumen’s Content Delivery Network’s (CDN) capacity to meet the growing demands of global broadcast companies, over-the-top (OTT) video streaming platforms, and video game companies that provide high-performance web applications, ultra-high definition (UHD) video streaming, and game downloads, already reaches 10 Tb/s.  This equals twice the capacity of the peak traffic record registered, ensuring maximum performance.

Moreover, nodes were added to our network in 15 Latin American cities to offer more services to more users (each new node represents a new market), while we deployed 878 kilometers of optical fiber, added 10 Tb/s of capacity to our terrestrial optical networks, and doubled the peering capacity, allowing more than 17 Tb/s exchanges with other providers.

Regarding direct connectivity to the cloud, four new cloud computing providers’ (CSP) data centers were interconnected, positioning Lumen as the only company to reach every data center of the region’s four main global CSPs.

These efforts are all backed up by recognition from the marketplace: for the second consecutive year, Lumen was named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for network services, global

In terms of products, the focus on security was emphasized in 2021: we increased security levels in SD-WAN solutions, implemented the SASE strategy (Secure Access Service Edge architecture), increased Event Correlation capabilities for better event monitoring, and reinforced application and service protection with WAF (Web Application Firewall) solutions.

Furthermore, to ensure the highest level of quality and compliance with rigorous international standards, our regional data centers successfully completed four new certification processes and received thirty-three recertifications throughout the year.

For Voice services, Lumen extended coverage of its 2-Way Voice and PSTN Replacement services, which now reach seven on-net markets in the region (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru). This gives customers access to more than 300 cities and to geographic and toll-free numbering services, call origination/termination, as well as to emergency services, among others.

Another of Lumen’s key objectives is to drive a more sustainable world, which is why all data centers are designed, built, and operated in accordance with leading energy efficiency standards.  To this end, Elera Renewables, Canadian group Brookfield Asset Management’s power generating company, sold 100,000 renewable energy certificates (I-REC) to Lumen Technologies, validating that the electricity consumed by data centers in Brazil is supplied entirely by renewable sources.  “We are exploring opportunities to promote clean energy across the region,” affirmed Barbero.

“We aim to deliver robust, high-quality, maximum-security services that allow our customers to benefit from limitless growth,” said Lumen's Leonardo Barbero. “We are constantly keeping an eye on trends to anticipate needs and provide cutting-edge solutions,” he concluded.
