Embracing AI for human-powered disruption
August 20, 2024

Since joining Lumen Technologies as Chief Marketing Officer, I’ve witnessed how AI has become a key to innovation, aligning perfectly with our identity as industry disruptors committed to redefining the boundaries of what’s possible. As a leading global technology company known for empowering organizations to capitalize on cutting-edge technologies, Lumen is leveraging AI to create new experiences for our customers, ultimately changing the landscape of the global market.

The gap is rapidly widening between those who are prioritizing AI adoption and leadership, and those who aren’t. Embracing AI today means setting the pace for tomorrow and establishing benchmarks for what comes next in your organization, in your industry, and beyond.

AI as a tool for human disruptors

When I think about the core of what differentiates Lumen from other companies in our field, it always comes down to the people. Our journey to AI was driven by a desire to empower the very people who drive our company to new frontiers of innovation – our employees.

There’s a cultural shift underway at Lumen as we evolve from traditional telecommunications to a more comprehensive global technology company. On one hand, each employee is on a personal mission within the scope of their team and role to identify how best to serve our customers. On the other hand, we have a cutting-edge infrastructure and internet backbone that enables us to harness data in countless ways and with unprecedented speed. Every day presents new business challenges, and Lumen employees, as architects of disruption, must be equipped with superior tools and technology to catalyze change in their business areas.

Rediscovering efficiency with Copilot for Microsoft 365

A company intent on industry disruption must first be a company that can use technology in the right way to accelerate its own progress. For Lumen, Copilot for Microsoft 365 has been transformational in enabling team members to optimize their time and access critical information swiftly, supporting our operations and the quality of service we provide to our customers.

In my conversations with Lumen employees, it’s clear that Copilot has become an integral tool for daily value creation. Once people experience the benefits of receiving meeting recaps and action items in such an efficient way, it becomes indispensable. For those like me who are often booked back-to-back, it’s possible to gather what I missed and who I need to follow up with from the meetings I was unable to attend. I see the same efficiency in our sales teams, marketing teams, and engineering teams who are discovering new levels of productivity and satisfaction as they shave time off mundane tasks and spend more of their day engaged in the creative and dynamic aspects of the job – the things they are there for.

Developers code for the future with GitHub Copilot

As we pioneer the future of connectivity, it’s essential that we’re writing the best code in the most efficient way to enable new scenarios. Lumen collaborated with Microsoft to choose GitHub Copilot to fuel the next generation of enterprise application delivery.

By changing the way our developers spend their time and bring applications to life, GitHub Copilot is helping us advance our ability to innovate and disrupt the industry. GitHub Copilot is supporting our developer's ability to code at a speed that accelerates customer support. We have changed the way we code and now we are seeing dividends paid in the customers we serve.

The future of connectivity and AI

A global network provides us incredible visibility into data demands. In the expanding era of Generative AI (GenAI), we're witnessing data demands skyrocket, positioning connectivity as the new vital currency. In addressing these new scenarios, Lumen is poised to revolutionize high bandwidth, low latency connectivity, enabling real-time interactions that unlock a range of experiences that were previously unimaginable. The demand for rapid data movement is unprecedented, requiring a network that can handle the load with agility and speed. And it's exactly where Lumen intends to lead the disruption in the GenAI landscape.

Given our role in global connectivity and the reliance of numerous entities on our infrastructure, the security and integrity of our network is a cornerstone of our operations. Working with partners like Microsoft who align with our ethical standards is essential for maintaining trust and delivering uncompromised service and security. This evolution is changing the way we go to market, with unique routes, unmatched coverage, and a digital platform built to give companies the flexibility, access and security they need to create an AI-enabled world.

The time for AI is now

These encouraging results are but a glimpse of how we plan to leverage AI to empower our teams to break new ground and innovate in ways previously unimaginable. Today’s fast-evolving technological landscape demands more – more efficiency, more innovation, more speed. Speaking from a place of experience in AI transformation, my advice to organizations still on the cusp of their AI journey is to start now. Speed in AI is no longer an advantage, it’s a necessity.
